gourd artist

Karen Saviskas has been creating her one-of-a-kind, handcrafted gourds since 1991. She combines traditional basketry techniques, hand staining, and pyrography to design the gourd’s outer surface. Most of her pieces are then adorned with natural materials and unique beads creating gourds with complex textures and rich colors. Her gourds have been featured in numerous publications including “The Complete Book of Gourd Craft”. In 1994 one of her gourd ornaments was chosen to decorate the White House Christmas tree and was featured on national television by Hillary Clinton. It is now part of a permanent collection at the Smithsonian Institute. Karen states: "I love working with the colors, textures and richness of gourds and natural materials. My inspiration comes from nature itself and through my work I hope to honor the beauty and sacred spirit of the earth."
