Docious is a painter currently working on small bird images and large, abstract works.
In the bird paintings, she creates an immediacy of line by using her fingernail to draw through the wet paint. An earth-tone palette adds to the primitive, natural feel of these works.
In her abstract paintings, Docious' love of color is explored. These works often have a great deal of texture created with a thickness of paint and scratching into the paint. Some of her recent images have also incorporated graphite drawing, making an interesting tension between the subtlety of the pencil line and the exuberance of the paint.
"When I am in my studio, time recedes, my mind is quieted, and I become full of possibility. One thing leads to another in a stream of unplanned events. Colors and forms emerge, ideas with how to play with them flit by. I engage with an image until the next one presents itself with a new set of requirements. I tinker. Sometimes I find solutions, colors so beautiful I want to eat them, shapes that vibrate their way off of my hands, combinations that convey my feelings without needing my permission. This process is completely unlike thinking, talking, or reasoning. It exists without need of comment."
